about

To: Gerhard Richter

Dear Gerhard,

Lauren and I were lucky to stumble across a retrospective of your work in Prague a few years ago. Recently I read some comments you made about “Betty”, a portrait of your daughter from 1988. You said something about how it evokes a sense of beauty being hidden away from us, of concealing itself. As I was composing these pieces, I noticed how I often build a melodic figure and then submerge it in effects and layers of sonic atmosphere, and I felt that the result was something like the figure being hidden away, disappearing, leaving only a trace, then surfacing again and again, like something beautiful bobbing on the waves.
